In my opinion, holistic chiropractic care should be one of the first lines of treatment for any health condition, especially pain, before resorting to drugs, particularly pain killers.
Pain killers have been identified as one of the leading causes of lethal overdose in America. Narcotics are responsible for 46 deaths per day. This prescription drug use can lead to other drug addictions as well, a problem that gets bigger by the day in our country. Besides being addictive, these pain killers have a number of concerning side effects, including constipation/GI issues, nausea, respiratory depression, increased risk of heart attack, and more.
I use pain killers as a perfect example because when most people have a physical injury or area in pain, they see their primary care doc, who often times will prescribe pain killers and/or muscle relaxers to address the issue. Not only is this simply a band-aid or cover-up for the pain, it does not correct the original cause of the pain!
Before seeing your primary care doc, see a chiropractor for any injury or discomfort/pain. Chiropractic care is extremely effective and can almost always eliminate the need for any prescription pain killer. Chiropractic care identifies the original CAUSE of the injury, so that it can be fixed, and therefore the cause of pain truly fixed.
In addition, in many cases, holistic chiropractic care can reduce the need for any type of drug for any type of health issue! Chiropractic care improves overall brain and nervous system function and thus overall health of the body! You would be surprised just how many health conditions improve by seeing your holistic chiropractor. Many people come in at first for pain, and then notice these other improvements. Some examples are reduced allergies/allergy symptoms, reduced headaches, better sleep/no longer needing sleep medication, better mood/no longer needing antidepressants, and more.
It is important to find a holistic chiropractor! One who addresses not only musculoskeletal health, but also biochemical (diet, toxins, organ systems, etc) and emotional health (mind-body techniques). Here at Synergy Chiropractic, we address all of the contributing factors to dis-ease in the body!
Lately I have gotten a lot of patients in with sciatica, even some new patients who were in near excruciating pain due to acute, flared up sciatica. Thankfully, with my incredible tools of chiropractic adjusting and Applied Kinesiology muscle testing and treatment techniques, I have been able to relieve most of my sciatica patients of their pain, so I figured I would do a post all about sciatica!
Sciatica is pain traveling from the lower back or butt down the leg, sometimes all the way to the foot, and is usually caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. This could be due to a number of different causes, including disc injury, spinal misalignment, internal inflammation, emotional stress, and more!
Again, I don't know what I would do without muscle testing! Through muscle testing, I can determine if the patient does indeed have a spinal misalignment causing irritation of the nerve, and if so if it is appropriate to adjust them and how so. I also use muscle testing to determine any muscle imbalances in the hips and pelvis causing problems in this area. We may adjust, do muscle therapy, use pelvic blocking, etc.
I can also use muscle testing to determine if other causes of sciatica are present, including ileocecal valve (gastro-intestinal) dysfunction, which often causes symptoms of sciatica as well. We often will fix the ileocecal valve through a number of manual techniques. Retrograde, or improper, flow of lymphatics (waste drainage) from the body can also contribute to sciatica. Another factor in sciatica? Sugar consumption. I use Total Body Modification techniques to address blood sugar balance in the body, sometimes working on reflex points, giving certain adjustments, etc. Another major cause of sciatica? Emotions! Emotional stress is so important to consider in health. Again, thankfully, Applied Kinesiology and my mentor have taught me effective mind-body techniques that can be done right in the office during the treatment! Sometimes it is necessary to take a nutritional supplement such as Manganese, B12, or Ligaplex to aid in healing the disc if it has been injured. I again use muscle testing to determine if the patient may benefit from any of these supplements.
As with any health condition, sciatica has a multitude of factors to consider, including not only structural/musculoskeletal, but also chemical and emotional. In my opinion, chiropractic care should be the first line of care for sciatica. Conventional medicine often takes a pharmaceutical approach to sciatica with pain killers and muscle relaxers. Why not fix the true cause?
Just another Friday doing what I LOVE!
Little Serena paid me a visit today for her regular chiropractic tune up and a little bit of Neuro Emotional Technique.
The benefits of chiropractic for kids?
*correction of birth trauma
*proper alignment of spine during growth
*improved immune system
*improved cognition and emotional health (especially when you add in Neuro Emotional Technique like we did with Serena today!)
I love treating patients of all ages and sizes and with any condition.
I'll be back at it tomorrow Saturday. Have a great weekend everyone!
By the way, we were on the floor as per patient request!
